    Johnny Weismuller Olympic Swimming Memorabilia

5 Olympic Gold Medals – 52 US National Championships -67 World Records, Tarzan Movie Actor,  First to swim 100m Freestyle in under a minute.

Johnny Weissmuller Olympic Memorabilia is a must for any serious collector. A man of 2 careers Swimming Champion and Hollywood Movie star, making some 12 Tarzan films 1932 – 1948.

The London 2012 Games are coming round fast and the interest in Olympic Memorabilia is increasing daily, now is a good time to invest in Collectables not only associated with past Champions, but by predicting future Gold Medal winners and buying while the price is right, Collectables which are obtained while the Athlete is still relatively unknown can based on future success, it may be a great investment.

Johnny (1904 – 1984) US Freestyle swimmer and actor was born in Timisoara Hungary, brought up in Pennsylvania his family relocated to Chicago where Johnny as a youngster contracted polio, he fought the illness bravely by practicing a regime of strenuous exercises which paid off for him and he eventually recovered to become a teenage member of the Illinois Athletic Club where he was coached by William Bacharach who was spoken of at the time as the best swimming coach in America.

I have known so many instances of youngsters contracting polio to go on to become outstanding sportsmen and women; I feel it is the intense exercising carried out to recover from the illness that in the future gives them the strength, motivation and ability to train at the top level.

Johnny soon developed his own unique style which he put to good effect when  he entered his first competitive swimming tournament the 1921 Amateur Athletic Union Outdoor Championship, winning the 50 yard and the 220 yard Freestyle. In 1922 Johnny broke the world record for the 150m backstroke and the 300m Freestyle, previously held by Duke Kahanamoku, a Hawaiian triple Gold Champion, 1912 Stockholm, 1920 Antwerp. The Duke ironically also, on retirement from swimming, successfully pursued an acting career.

Johnny competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris winning Gold Medals in 100m/400m freestyle, 4x200 freestyle Relay. His efforts competing as a team member of the American Water Polo team achieved a 3rd place.

In 1927 he set 100yd freestyle record which many regard as one of his greatest achievements, Olympic Memorabilia from this event would be of particular interest

In 1928 at the Summer Olympics in Holland he won another 2 titles in the 400m Freestyle and the 4 x200m relay.

He was inducted into the American Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983

Movie collectable re prints from the 12 successful Tarzan productions are relatively prolific as is material from Metro Goldwyn Mayer, MGM and the Jungle Jim Columbia productions. What the collector really should be seeking is authentic original material as listed below:

Costumes, costume sketches, movie posters, props, wardrobe, scripts, postcards, theatre programmes, periodicals, magazines, original photos and stills, film company press books complete with images, credits, bio, plot info, original photos, autographs etc.

    Olympic Swimming Memorabila.

Johnny Weissmuller authentic Collectables are rare and I would be interested in all items, though specifically from any of the following events:

1922, 100 yds. freestyle at the Alameda pool California,

    1924 Paris Summer Olympics.

1927 the 51 sec 100 yd. freestyle record at the University of Michigan Union Pool.

    1928 Netherlands Olympics.

Collectable items that would interest me include: Committee reports, commemorative plaques and medals, posters, badges, press admittance, booklet rules and regulations lapel pins and original photographs/autographs.

Collecting Olympic Memorabilia can be great fun and rewarding as either a hobby or small business

    Good luck with your collecting

Let me know how you get on?
